This monumental work is divided into seven volumes
after the manner of the seven great stars. The city of Yedo
is treated according to seven geographical divisions after the
location of the seven stars, with the Shogun's castle-resident
in the centre. All the famous places, such as great temple
and shrines, places of scenic beauty and historical association
are depicted in graphic terms and with copious pictorial
illustrations. The book was originally compiled by Saito
Sachio during Kansei era (1789-1801) , but it was revised are
supplemented by his son, Agatamaro, only to be left to find
consummation by Gesshin, Agatamaro's son. Thus it repre
sents the work of over 30 years accomplished by the three
succeeding generations of men. Saito Sachio died in 179
63 years old.

This is a detailed pictorial guide to, and illustration of
the great Itsukushima Shrine. The first five volumes at
devoted to descriptions, literary and graphic, of the main
shrine and other shrines and Buddhist temples scattered over
the sacred islands of Itsukushima, their architecture, scene
features of various famous spots and important rites and
festivities observed, etc. The latter five volumes contain
small replicas of priceless treasures kept at the Shrine, to
gether with their explanations. The postscript states that
the book was begun in 1828, and completed in 1842 Okada
Kiyoshi, the author, was a noted scholar of Hiroshima wh
it is said, had exhausted his private fortune in carrying out
this work.
