(B e 1)HONCHO GASHI (HISTORY OF JAPANESE PAINTING)
    Vol. 1 to Vol. 5. Five books.
    Written by Kano Eino.
    Published by Yoshino Sobei and Maruya Genbei in Genroku 6th year (1693).
    In Genroku 4th year (1691) the book entitled "Honcho
    Gaden" (Biographies of Japanese Painters) was published in
    five volumes, and later, the 6th volume under the title "Honcho
    Gain" was published, and the two works have since been
    incorporated in one work under the name "Honcho Gashi."
    It is a history of Japanese painting, of course.

    Reprinted in 1888,
    The book has a preface by Kohitsu Ryochu under date
    of Meiji 16th year (1883).

    Thirteen books.
    Meiwa 7th year (1770) edition. The book was first published in Kyoho 3rd (1718) and revised in Horeki 5th year
    (1775).
    This is a sort of encyclopedic book, containing information about painting, sculpture, calligraphy, metal work, swordsmiths, old coins, furniture, utensils, etc., both old and new,
    Chinese and Japanese.
    To this category of books belong those small "pocket"
    editions of various books, especially directories, reference
    books, which set forth some facts and information of general
    interest arranged in an easily accessible form.
(B e 4)BAIEN KISHO (BAIEN CURIOSITIES)
    Two books.
    Published by Nomura Baien.
    A reprint in Meiji era, the original being published by
    Baien in Bunsei 11th year (1828).
    The book depicts various articles of furniture and other
    things representing characteristic manners and customs of
    different districts and epochs, collected by Nomura Baien, the
    noted antiquarian and dillettante, and published for private
    distribution among friends.

    Published by Aoyama Seikichi in 1890.
    A similar work to the "Baien Kisho" of Baien, written
    in imitation of that book.

    Published by Ota Mankichi in 1881.
    This is a book devoted to the appreciation of works of
    art and craft with drawings.
(B e 7)KOBAIEN BOKUFU
    Nine books.
    Written by Matsu Gentai.
    This is a new edition of Meiji era, the original edition
    being published in Kanpo 1st year (1742), and a revise
    edition being published in the following year.
    The book treats of various modes of manufacture an
    other particulars concerning the sumi, (ink-sticks) of both
    China and Japan, compiled by Kobaien, the well-known ink
    stick maker of Nara. It contains several prefaces by famous
    devotees of calligraphy.

(B e 8)HONCHO KAJIKO (NOTES ON JAPANESE SMITHS)
    Vol. 1 to Vol. 18. Twelve books.
    Written by Kamada Gyomyo.
    Published by Suwaraya Mohei and others in Kansei 12th
    year (1800).
    It contains a good deal of information concerning the
    blacksmiths' craft as practised in Japan from olden times,
    gleaned from more than sixty books of reference. In the
    printed postscript it is stated that the book was written by
    one Kamada Saburodayu in July, of 7th Kansei era (1795).
(B e 9)KINKO KANTEI HIKETSU (THE SECRET OF APPRAISING METAL WORK)
    Two Books.
    Compiled by Noda Keimei.
    Drawings by Takano Bankan and Noda Shomei.
    Published in Bunsei 3rd year (1820).
    This is a book expounding the secrets of appraising the
    merits of sword-guards, rivet-covers, etc., of the swords made
    by the Goto family.

    Two books.
    Written by Tauchi Yonesaburo.
    Published by Matsuyamado in 1883.
    It has two prefaces by Baiken Yuko, i. e. written in Kaei
    7th year (1854) and Ansei 2nd year (1855).

    Drawings by Hishikawa Moronobu.
    This is a new edition in Taisho era (1912-1926),the
    original edition being published by Kashiwaya Yoichi, Yedo
    in Empo 8th year (1680). The book is descriptive of the art
    of laying out landscape gardens.
