Instructions on Downloading and Installing the Add-on AlternaTIFF

In order to view many of the scanned documents in the Historiographical Institute database, your web browser must be able to display TIFF image files. For this purpose, we recommend that you download the free web browser add-on called AlternaTIFF, created by Medical Informatics Engineering.

  • In order to install the software, you must have full download privileges for your PC. Many networked computers cannot download this plug-in without permission from the network administrator.
  • Upon downloading and installing this software, you may be requested by Medical Informatics Engineering to register your free version with the company by providing your email address.
  • Regrettably, no Mac (or Unix/Linux) versions of AlternaTIFF exist at this time. The only TIFF plug-ins for the Mac are QuickTime and Accel ViewTIFF.

Installation Procedure

  • Access the AlternaTIFF download page at http://www.alternatiff.com/.
  • As per the information on the AlternaTIFF website, please select download option #1 (ActiveX control, auto-install) if you are using Internet Explorer as your web browser. Click on the link which says Click here to go to the installation page. If you are using Netscape, Opera, Mozilla, Firefox, or any other web browser, select download option #3 (Standard web browser plug-in Netscape-style). Save the file alternatiff-1_8_2.exe to your computer, then open it and follow the directions provided.
  • When using Internet Explorer, the link from option #1 will redirect you to the screen titled AlternaTIFF ActiveX auto-installation for Internet Explorer. Please click on the link Auto-install AlternaTIFF ActiveX control in order to begin the installation process.
  • When you click on the AlternaTIFF ActiveX auto-installation for Internet Explorer link, a message may appear at the bottom of the screen saying, If you can read this, the AlternaTIFF ActiveX control is installed in your browser. In this case, the software has already been installed in your computer, so please click on the link click here to reactivate it, which will have appeared beneath the text, If you can read this, the AlternaTIFF ActiveX control is installed in your browser.
  • You may need to close your browser window before continuing with the installation process. While installing the add-on, you will be prompted twice with Security Warnings. In order to finish installing the add-on, you will need to click Install, and then Yes when those options appear.
  • More complete information on downloading the software and troubleshooting problems is provided on the www.alternatiff.com website. Their FAQ is very complete, and should answer any questions you may have.
