琉球大学付属図書館『琉球郷土史料目録』（一九六六年）によれば、琉球大学には、現物およびマイクロフィルムの形で、幕末維新期の琉球史料・研究書（論文）が相当数所蔵されていることになっている。これらの多くは、現在東京近辺で入手が困難なものであり、横山が主宰する科学研究費（重点領域）「欧米外交文書による対琉球条約の研究」の進行上も必要と考えられたので、調査の上、撮影・マイクロコピーの入手を行なうことを考えた。
琉球大学付属図書館に所蔵される、琉球関係の欧文文献は、主として二つのコレクションに由来するものである。すなわち、BullコレクションとKerrコレクションである。Bullコレクションは、戦前鹿児島で宣教師だったBull師が布教のかたわら収集した欧文文献で、特に宣教師という立場を活かして、幕末期に琉球に滞在した宣教師達に関する文献が豊富に集められている。コレクションはその後、琉球大学と米国（エール大学神学部付属図書館・シラキューズ大学図書館琉球コレクション）に分散して収められることとなり、後者に関してはマイクロフィルムで琉球大学に保管されていた（と思われる。山口栄鉄『琉球 異邦典籍と史料』参照）。
Kerrコレクションについては、George H．Kerr Collection：A Bibliography of Okinawan Studies（Ryukyu University Library，１９８６）が作成されている。
Kerr氏は米国スタンフォード大のフーヴァー研究所の研究者で（台湾の研究もある）、米国琉球民政長官ルイス准将の要請を受けて、琉球史に関する当時唯一の英文通史である『琉球の歴史』（一九五三年）を著わした。
調査は実働三日間（三月二二日〜二五日）を予定していたが、実際現地で確認したところによれば、これらマイクロフィルムの多くは保存状態が悪く数年前破棄されたこと、前掲二目録による架番号では必ずしも出納できないことが判明し、史料の出納そのものに相当の時間をとられることとなった。結果調査は一日弱のみとなり、閲覧撮影できた史料はかぎられるものとなった。以下にそれらの書目を掲げる。なお撮影順である。
